Mayor Making and the ‘Throwing of the Hot Pennies’

Rye’s Annual Mayor Making ceremony takes place on the first May bank holiday (except for election years). The Council’s annual meeting is held in the Town Hall, where the new Mayor is elected. This is followed by a civic service at St Mary’s Church. Once the council and guests have returned to the Town Hall, following the church service, the traditional ‘throwing of the hot pennies’ takes place.

Here is a flavour of Mayor Making 2024, captured by Martin and KT Bruce.
